  • Mushing, or dog sledding, is the state sport of Alaska.

  • Dog sled teams can have any number of dogs, but typically no more than 16 – the maximum limit for the Iditarod race.

  • There are around 3,500 Kodiak brown bears on Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago.

  • The best bear-viewing season on Kodiak is between June and September, when the bears gather at streams to feed on spawning salmon, often with their cubs.

  • Before the Alaska Purchase of 1867, Kodiak was the capital of Russian Alaska. When the United States bought the territory the capital was first moved to Sitka.

  • Besides hypothermia due to the intense weather conditions, thin ice is a major danger to dog sled teams.

  • Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States, after Hawaii.

  • To ensure fruitful and sustainable fishing, Alaska’s Department of Fish & Game stocks certain lakes throughout the state with different fish such as salmon and rainbow trout.

  • The best times for ice fishing are right after the water freezes and right before it breaks up for the season – however, these are also the most dangerous times to go out on the ice because of instability.

  • One of the biggest dangers when landing on glaciers is flat light, which prevents a pilot from seeing the contours on the icy ground below.
