Abandoned: AME Church

The Team
Jay, Dan and Mark pose for a picture in one of the church offices. The Ruffin Nichols Memorial Church was built in 1844 as an Episcopal church serving a wealthy Philadelphia community. Everything from its massive stone facade, lavish sanctuary to it's ornate stain glass windows is a testament to Gilded Age Philadelphia.

Ruffin Church, Philadelphia
With a 170 year-old building about to come down, Jay and the team hopes to be able to salvage pieces of American history. First they will explore the church to find objects of value. Then, they'll have to meet the with the owners and negotiate the best possible price. This church tells a boom and bust story. It was built when the neighborhood was at its wealthiest. But as the neighborhood declined, so did the membership. With only 12 members left in 2010 the church finally had to close its doors.
