  • Though they move into the Sitka Sound area weeks before, Pacific herring spawn in there Sitka Sound in late March to early April.

  • Pacific herring can lay more than 20,000 eggs, or roe, per fish.

  • Spawning usually takes place in shallow, coastal environments where the eggs can attach to vegetation.

  • The Pacific herring is said to live about 8 years in southeast Alaska and up to 16 years in the Bering Sea.

  • Pacific herring come from marine fisheries, not farms, and in Alaska are usually caught using purse seines.

  • In the Sitka Sound fishery, after the seine (net) is set out near a school of fish by the main fishing boat, a smaller skiff helps pull the net around and up, closing it off.

  • According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the total value of Alaska’s commercial fisheries is $1.5 billion to the fishermen; with a wholesale value of $3.6 billion. Economists have estimated that this industry contributes $5.8 billion and 78,500 jobs to the Alaskan economy.

  • For sac roe fisheries like Alaska’s herring fisheries, openings are timed exactly to occur when herring have produced the maximum amount of roe.

  • According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the commercial herring industry started in 1878 when 30,000 pounds were caught and prepared for human consumption, Alaska's. Herring provide a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.
