What a lot of ivory tower B.S.  72 hours?  It depends on the extent of the problem.  72 hours is 3 days.  "American Blackout" was over 10 days.  If you're out of water after 3 days, you risk death fairly quickly.

Information after the event is insufficient.  Being informed, and taking action, on preparing BEFORE the event is key.

A lot of useful information is available for free on the Internet (for example, military survival manuals).  Download it; print it (paper needs no electricity to work), READ it.  Get the books if it is more practical.  ACT on the information to be PREPARED.  Get a first aid course.  Learn how to garden (and have one even if you have to abandon it to save yourself).  Figure a way to leave if the roads are blocked without going through 'problem' areas.  Etc. etc. etc.
