great episode as always. although you played it extremely safe by talking about "superstition" and not using the word RELIGION, which you most definitely should've

As a vision researcher I have never heard of cortical diffusion as a possible explanation of the brain processing patterns with good continuation. Visual cortex is extremely complex and simple diffusion of neurotransmitters to neighboring regions in visual cortex is unlikely, given that there is lateral inhibition and multiple other things going on in the retina and other regions prior to even reaching visual cortex that could prevent this from happening. I also have had trouble finding the term "cortical diffusion" used in any research or elsewhere online. Is there a citation you have for this? Upon hearing it I was initially excited that I may have stumbled across something new as an explanation for these visual illusions, but after thinking about it more it seemed to be unlikely.
