What is the PRESERVE OUR PLANET FILM + PSA CONTEST?
The 2008/2009 annual Preserve Our Planet Film + PSA contest gives college students the opportunity to produce a short film or PSA geared toward the core idea of Together We Can Make a Difference. Films should creatively address the core idea as laid out in the overview.
What is a “core idea”?
For the purposes of this contest, the “core idea” of Together We Can Make a Difference serves as creative direction for all entrants. Please read the overview, which provides a further explanation of what the judges are looking for.
What is a PSA?
PSA stands for “public service announcement.” The PSAs entered should be no longer than 30 seconds.
Who is eligible to enter the PRESERVE OUR PLANET FILM + PSA CONTEST?
College students 18 years of age or older. Part-time or full-time enrollment is acceptable as well as enrollment in an accredited film, art or design school. You must also be a U.S. citizen.
When are entries due?
Submission must be postmarked by December 31, 2008 and mailed to the Preserve Our Planet Film + PSA Contest.

Why do I have to mail in all entry materials?
We must have your original signature on the entry form. We do, however, encourage you to print double sided if you can.
What is the winner selection process?
A first-place winner will be selected in each category by a panel of judges (short film and PSA) and receive a cash prize plus a trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2009 to attend a world gathering of National Geographic Explorers and show their winning submission to this exclusive audience.
• First-place — winning short film – $5,000
• First-place — winning PSA – $3,000
The panel will select up to 3 runner ups in each category, which will then be posted to PreserveOurPlanet.com. The PSA and short film with the most votes will win the Audience Award and receive a cash prize plus a trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2009.
• Audience Award — Online voting winner: short film – $1,500
• Audience Award — Online voting winner: PSA – $1,000
What is the world gathering of National Geographic Explorers?
This is an annual gathering of National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, Emerging Explorers and fellows. The theme for this year is conservation.
Are there changes to the online voting process from last year?
Yes, everyone will be allowed to vote as much as they want for their favorite PSAs and short films.
Where else can my entry be seen?
A selection of winning and non-winning films and PSAs may also be featured on additional National Geographic Channel platforms, such as the National Geographic Channel, National Geographic Channel VOD, the Preserve Our Planet Film Festival website and other platforms where appropriate.
