Life for them consists of finding money for dope, scoring dope, shooting up and finding somewhere to park up and sleep for the night. When they’re high, Hawaii can seem like paradise, but when they’re craving heroin, it feels like hell.

24-year-old Stevie has only been using ice for a few months, but he’s already addicted and recently tried to commit suicide. He lives at home with parents in one of Oahu’s middle class neighborhoods. His mother Gail, is scared of loosing him to jail or overdose. After stealing his mom’s car to go score, the family forces Stevie into rehab, where he battles addiction and psychological problems in an attempt to stop using the drug.

He’s pioneered a radical new form of probation called HOPE (Hawaii's Opportunity Probation with Enforcement), that keeps probationers off drugs and out of court. With weekly random drugs tests and jail, if probationers test positive, Judge Alm’s probation is helping to fight the war on drugs and save the state millions of dollars.
