Since ancient times, the practice of body modification has pervaded religion, science and art in cultures across the world. In San Diego, Calif., a church leader encourages his congregation to get closer to their spirituality by embracing pain, hooks and full body suspension. In a public park, several members of the church undergo a rigorous process of inserting under their skin anchors attached to wiring, then suspending themselves in the air hanging only by their skin.
