Bitcoin has never been hacked. It is very important to make this point. 

Some websites accepting the currency have been hacked but Bitcoin itself has not (and likely never will).

The only way to 'hack' Bitcoin would be to crack SHA256, which is extensively used wordwide for security. If a mistake is found in SHA256 this would cause havoc worldwide. Bitcoin, on the other hand, would just change the hashing algorithm.
