I remember working 9/11/01 as an RN at burn center in PHX. We were preparing a team to go to NY to help with what we all thought would be numerous burn victims. Then the towers fell. Our help was no longer needed, everyone was dead. I remember seeing NY's medical teams all standing at the ready, empty gurneys. Amidst the chaos they had efficiently implemented their disaster plan smoothly & effectively. Emergencies, you see are OUR business. I have never gotten over how there was no plan for getting people out of those towers in case of fire. Like the titanic, it seemed to ignore the possibility of it’s demise. Had there been fire escapes perhaps those jumping would have been climbing down. Should there have been ropes or inflatable slides to nearby rooftops on every floor? Idk....something! I think the fire dept. in a city full of skyscrapers needs to be equipped with a better plan than sending men up to their death. I’m not blaming anyone but am hoping some changes are being invented to more effectively deal with a recurrence. After all, we do now insist ocean-liners carry enough lifeboats for all aboard.
