Sean Vaughn is serving a life sentence at Louisiana State Penitentiary for second degree murder. "I was not out there living a life of crime. I mean, before coming to prison I was a productive citizen, a homeowner. I wasn't a bad guy out there. Things happened and I wound up here."
"You look at this and you say to yourself, this is it. This is all that there will ever be. You look to the future and there is none. Just empty space."
In prison for 10 years, he has attained "trustee" status, the highest level of privilege in Angola prison, and was one of the founding members of the prison's closed-circuit television station. "Through the TV station we can show first of all what is going on it here, how these guys are transformed. Hopefully someone will take a look and give them a second chance."
He maintains a close relationship with his wife Tina Vaughn, and step-daughter Lakeisha who visit him regularly.
"I sit and look at my surroundings. You can put it out of your mind sometimes. You know you're here. You know this is where you live. You can reach over and touch the next guy. You put it out of your mind, but sometimes it just gets really hard. It just gets really really hard. You look at this and you say to yourself, this is it. This is all that there will ever be. You look to the future and there is none. Just empty space."
