As a major landmark of the United States, the Grand Canyon has attracted thousands of tourists from across the world. With breathtaking views and a great range of wildlife, the Grand Canyon hosts much historical and geological evidence. Here are more little-known facts about this must-see spot:

The Grand Canyon is one of Earth?s few landforms that can be seen from space.
The Grand Canyon encompasses 1.2 million acres.
The exposed geologic strata of the Grand Canyon’s walls represent one of the most complete records of geological history in the world.
The Grand Canyon is home to 91 mammal species and over 350 species of birds.
Five of the Earth’s seven life zones are represented in the Grand Canyon.
About 1,737 known species of vascular plants, 167 species of fungi, 64 species of moss, and 195 species of lichen can be found in Grand Canyon National Park.
One of the rarest birds in the world, the California condor, lives in the Grand Canyon. The largest land bird in North America, the condor sports a wingspan of 9 1/2 feet and weighs up to 22 pounds.
Human artifacts found in the Grand Canyon are nearly 12,000 years old.

The humpback chub, an endangered freshwater fish, is found only in the Colorado River basin.
The bubonic plague still exists in the Grand Canyon and is most likely transferred through rodents.
