America's First National Park: Yellowstone

From Old Faithful to the buffalo, Yellowstone National Park gives us a place to connect with nature. Since its foundation in 1872, thousands of people have flocked to the park for sight-seeing and relaxation. Learn more about this great national treasure:

Yellowstone National Park contains over two million acres.

Over 1,500 kilometers of back-country trails crisscross Yellowstone.
Yellowstone gets an incredible amount of rain. While Wyoming can expect six or seven inches of rain a year, the park gets some 24 inches.
Yellowstone contains approximately one-half of the world’s hydrothermal features.
A burnt region becomes fire resistant for around 50 years. A new burn will be stopped at an area that was scorched. As a result, different burns fit into each other like a puzzle.
After a 60-year absence, wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone in 1995.
Some 4,000 bison roam Yellowstone.
There are 10,000 thermal features in the park.

The ground at Yellowstone emits about 5 gigawatts of energy, which is equivalent to the amount of energy it takes to provide a city of two million people with power.
The Yellowstone caldera is one of the world’s largest.
Molten rock may be as close as three miles below the surface in parts of the park.
Hydrogen sulfide gas is what makes the mud pots famous for their rotten egg smell.
Congress declared Yellowstone America’s first national park in 1872.
Old Faithful geyser can shoot up to 8,400 gallons of water at heights of up to 184 feet in a single eruption.
Microorganisms inhabiting Yellowstone’s hydrothermal features have found their way into modern science and criminal law. In the mid 1960s the discovery of heat-loving organisms highlighted the park’s rare biological resources. Known as thermophiles, these organisms thrive in the boiling waters of hydrothermal features and have led to such advancements as DNA fingerprinting, AIDS detection, and criminal identification on the basis of a single hair.
The total volume of the magma chambers under Yellowstone is approximately 15,000 cubic kilometers.
