An Undisturbed Sanctuary: The Everglades

In the southern half of Florida lies a beautiful and wild secret. Filled with exotic wildlife, the Florida Everglades has attracted adventurous explorers to its waters and wilderness since before its establishment in 1947. Learn more about one of America's almost untouched wild spaces:

Covering 1.5 million acres, the Everglades was established as a national park in 1947, later as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976, and finally as a World Heritage Site in 1979.

Everglades National Park is home to more than 300 species of birds and over 1,000 species of plants.
Of the 1,000 plant species in the Everglades, over 20 percent are non-native or exotic.
Half of the original Everglades ecosystem has been drained, and the national park now protects much of what is left.
Everglades National Park is the third largest national park in the lower 48 states.
There are 27 different species of snake in the Everglades, and only four of them are venomous.

The Everglades is home to the largest stand of protected mangrove forests in the Western Hemisphere.

The Everglades ecosystem is the sole source of drinking water for more than 6 million people in South Florida.

The Everglades is not a swamp, but technically a river, flowing slowly at around a quarter mile per day.

The Everglades restoration project is the largest environmental repair job in history.
