The term 'little green men' to describe extraterrestrials stemmed from Edgar Rice Burroughs book The Princess of Mars (1917) in which he spoke of 'green men of Mars'. It didn?t come into popular usage until the 1950?s. 'Little Green Men' was also the title of an X-Files episode in the second season.
Kenneth Arnold did NOT invent the term 'Flying Saucer'. On June 24th 1947 Arnold was flying over Mount Rainier, Washington when he saw nine bright objects flying 'like a saucer would if you skipped it across a pond'. An article written in the East Oregonian referred to the objects as 'Flying Saucers' and the term quickly caught on.
The TV movie Roswell starring Kyle MacLachlan was filmed on location in Arizona not New Mexico.
The military is one of the biggest employers in New Mexico. Kirtland, Holloman and Cannon Air Force Bases, White Sands Missile Range & Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories make up some of the key experimental centers for the US Armed Forces.
British TV Producer, Ray Santilli was responsible for creating the fake 'alien autopsy'. The silent twenty-minute grainy black and white film shows an autopsy carried out on an alien alleged to have been recovered at Roswell in 1947. The US government started officially looking for UFO's at the end of 1947 with Project Sign. It was followed in 1948 with Project Grudge and then Project Blue Book in 1952. It was officially closed in 1970.
Once it was revealed that the Aztec crashed saucer story was a hoax in 1953 it seemed to have had a real effect on the UFO community. Thereafter crashed saucer stories did not receive widespread consideration in UFO circles again until the mid-1970s.
In 1961, a Wisconsin farmer reported seeing three creatures resting by their flying saucer ? they wore turtleneck sweaters, knit helmets and were cooking pancakes, which tasted of cardboard.
