Renowned dog behavior expert Cesar Millan is one of the most sought-after specialists working in the field of dog rehabilitation. From bullying Chihuahuas to timid great Danes, Cesar has an uncanny gift for communicating with dogs and seeing the world through their eyes. Cesar has been called ?a Dr. Phil for dogs,? and for good reason. His amazing rehabilitations of aggressive, scared, lazy, compulsive, and jealous dogs captured the national spotlight when his National Geographic Channel (NGC) series Dog Whisperer premiered in 2004.
In addition to co-creating and starring in Dog Whisperer, Millan has co-authored three New York Times Bestsellers: Cesar?s Way, Be the Pack Leader, and A Member of the Family. He has also created numerous instructional DVDs and CDs, and continues to host a popular series of personal appearance seminars where he teaches attendees how to apply his techniques in the training and rehabilitation of their dogs.
Millan was born in rural Culiacan, Mexico, and grew up in a small house with no amenities. He spent much of his early childhood on his grandfather?s farm in nearby Ixpalino where he observed the behavior of the farm?s many dogs. When he was a teenager, his family purchased their first TV. He preferred the classic Lassie and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin series and, inspired by them, decided that he would move to California and become the world?s best dog trainer.
In his first few years in the United States, Millan was surprised by how troubled so many of the dogs he encountered seemed to be. He began thinking that he should redirect his dream to becoming a rehabilitator rather than trainer of dogs. With the money he saved from his job washing cars, he started a freelance dog rehabilitation service, primarily offering his expertise with extreme cases. He was quickly recommended around town, and his client list expanded rapidly. In 1994, he came to the attention of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith who likewise referred him to other celebrities. That same year, Millan married his wife Ilusion who inspired him to upgrade his business and reach further into the community. Together they opened the Dog Psychology Center, a two-acre facility in South Los Angeles, expressly to rehabilitate troubled, aggressive, and condemned dogs. Then as now, Millan keeps a pack of thirty to forty ?unadoptable? and abandoned dogs at the center.
Today, Millan has become a pop culture icon, inspiring flattering parodies on South Park and Saturday Night Live; references on popular shows including Jeopardy! and Two and a Half Men, appearances on Oprah, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Martha Stewart, Carson Daly, Today Show, The View, Nightline, World News Tonight, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, and Live with Regis and Kelly; as well as cameo roles on the hit series Ghost Whisperer and Bones. He has worked with many celebrity clients including: Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Oprah Winfrey, Nicolas Cage, Michael Eisner, Scott Rudin, S.I. Newhouse, Ridley Scott, Rebecca Romijn, Michael Bay, Hillary and Haylie Duff, Denise Richards, and Vin Diesel.
Millan has been recognized with numerous awards throughout his career. In 2005, the National Humane Society Genesis Award Committee presented him with a Special Commendation for his work in rehabilitating animals; in 2006 and 2007 Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Program; in 2006, Millan and his wife Ilusion were awarded honorary membership in the International Association of Canine Professionals; in 2007, he was awarded the Michael Landon Award for Inspiration to Youth Through Television; and in 2008, he was honored with a Treasure Award from the City of Los Angeles.
Millan lives in Southern California with his wife Ilusion and their two young sons, Andre and Calvin. Cesar considers all of them instrumental to his work and feels it is important to pass knowledge from generation to generation just like his father and grandfather did for him.

In 2007, Cesar and his wife Ilusion created a new way to reach troubled dogs: the Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation. The non-profit organization supports the work of shelters and rescues across the country. Through donations of funds and training aids, as well as careful application of his rehabilitation philosophy, Cesar has changed the way these groups think about dogs with behavioral issues. Now many of them are working with their communities to rehabilitate dogs instead of adding names to the list for euthanasia.
Our dream at the Cesar and Ilusion Millan Foundation is to give every homeless dog across the nation proper care and a second chance. And we're on our way to reaching our goal! As of December 2008, we have supported over 60 shelters and rescues across the country. Generous donations from dog lovers across the country have helped:
We are very proud of what we have accomplished in our short tenure, but there is still so much to do. Thousands of shelters and rescues still need our assistance. To reach them, we need your help.
Want to know how he does it? Find out from Cesar himself, dog training professionals, and former Dog Whisperer guests.
From Cesar Millan Dogs are my life; I show love through rehabilitating them and in extreme cases, saving them from being euthanized. I rescue dogs, create balance, and give them a life of happiness and contentment which would otherwise never have been possible. Some might say I love in a quiet way. But it is a love that comes from the heart and soul.
Many of the dogs I deal with have been flooded with unconditional love. What they lack is structure and discipline in their lives. And this lack of discipline can oftentimes lead to a behavioral problem. In some cases the problems are quirky. But in many instances when I am called in, this lack of discipline has led to serious aggression, and oftentimes their owners are at their wits’ end — having gone through countless trainers, and in the extreme cases, even been told to put the dog to sleep. I NEVER think that is a legitimate answer
I can be firm with a dog. Especially when the dog is a super-aggressive red zone case. But, make no mistake about it — there is a big difference between firm and abusive. I give [dogs] a firm correction, a firm grab in the neck, which is what dogs do to each other. They pin each other, and they hold on to each other until one of them surrenders. Dogs do this to each other. I do not do it with anger or frustration. I come with a calm, assertive approach to create a calm, submissive state of mind. Submissive to me does not mean cowed, it means accepting of fair human leadership, and that the unwanted behavior is not tolerated. A mother dog will reprimand a puppy physically, and she does it firmly but it is not abusive. I am the same — firm and fair — not abusive in any way.
My approach and methods are instinct, which come from working with thousands of dogs for over 20 years. I use my experience to help owners, but I obviously can’t help everyone, so I am the first to advise owners to seek help and assistance from experienced professionals. I take the recommendation in the show that owners consult a professional very seriously. I absolutely believe it. I always say, my show is not a how-to show — that is why you need a professional.
From Martin Deeley, co-founder and former president of the International Association of Canine Professionals Cesar Millan has brought reality back to the world of dog ownership. His ability to communicate not only with dogs but also their owners has created a following that only someone who can understand and empathize with people can achieve. His natural ability to create a feeling of being listened to, understood and not condemned has developed a following from owners who not only understand what he is teaching but also feel they are part of his family. This is not simply star adoration but an emotion that generates belonging and being part of his pack.
Owners are learning to respect their dogs for what they are — dogs. Owners are learning that understanding what a dog is and does can help them create a long and lasting, loving relationship with their dogs without resorting to bribery and childlike rewards. Being leader of the pack does not imply strong punishment and corrections but an assertive, confident approach where the dog recognizes your leadership.
From Jill Morstad, Ph.D., Prairie Skies — Dog Training for Open Spaces in Lincoln, Nebraska I frame Cesar Millan’s work as primarily a leadership program, where talking to the dog is neither relevant nor necessary. And I tell my clients that they MUST also work on training, because I know that I will never successfully prevent them from talking to their dogs. With or without my permission, with or without my help, with or without thinking about it, ALL the dog owners I know use words to communicate with their dogs. They use words like sit, down, come, stay, no, heel, no, drop it, no, be quiet, no, no, no.
In his demonstrations of leadership, Cesar does not say sit, down, heel, or no — yet his command of a dog’s attention and respect strikes many owners as magical. Cesar isn't talking. He's leading. An owner who is talking is not leading and generally, is not training either. And in my experience, they're all talking — and waaaay too much.
From Cyndi and Sonny, Former Dog Whisperer Guests The methods that Cesar taught me were straightforward, helpful, and logical. He helped me to peek inside Sonny's world and stop translating his actions by my projections. For the first time I saw Sonny's true nature as a dog with dog needs ... and the way I could empower myself to give him what he needs. After this experience, my confidence began to improve parallel to Sonny's ability to experience life with less fear. After the show, I received three calls checking on Sonny's condition and offering further assistance. Each interaction displayed everyone's true commitment to the show and even the quality of life of one dog.
From Abbie Jaye & Sparky, Former Dog Whisperer Guests When you see the Dog Whisperer episode that Sparky and I were featured in, you see a three-day, multiple-hour profound experience that has been edited into 30 minutes. Many of the things I learned from Cesar Millan were not shown in the episode, but they will stay with me forever. I can say without a doubt, this experience, and Cesar’s advice, changed my life. Cesar helped me realize that if I don’t start facing my fears, they will consume me. And by doing this, he allowed me to be the leader Sparky needed.
From Jim, Roxie, & Brady, Former Dog Whisperer Guests With Cesar's help, words and guidance it became so obvious where it all went wrong. Attitude. We "expected" Brady to behave badly and he did. We did not set limits for him to follow, and he didn't. We did not "assume" that he would follow our lead, and he did not. When Cesar showed up at our house, our lives changed. Cesar changed our outlook and showed us how to set limits for Brady through discipline, changing our attitude and rethinking who was in charge.

From Cesar Millan
1. Dogs are not people. What makes them happy isn’t necessarily what makes us happy. What dogs desire is simple: regular exercise, a stable pack leader, and affection that is properly earned. 2. Walk your dog for at least 45 minutes every day. A structured walk on a regular basis is crucial, especially for dogs with behavioral problems, and it is the most powerful tool you have to bond with your dog. 3. Be consistent. Make sure all family members set the same rules, boundaries, and limitations for your dog. 4. Affection at the wrong time can foster an unstable mind. Share affection after your dog has exercised and eaten, changed an unwanted behavior into a behavior you asked for, responded to a rule or command, or entered a relaxed, calm-submissive state. 5. Dogs experience the world with their nose, eyes, and then ears. When meeting a dog for the first time, establish its trust by allowing it to experience your scent before engaging in eye contact or speaking to him. 6. Breed is not destiny. More important than choosing the right breed is selecting a dog with an energy level that is compatible with your energy and lifestyle. 7. Dogs need leadership. Establish yourself as the pack leader by mastering the walk and following the guideline "exercise, discipline, and then affection." 8. Let your dog check the weather. Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it is too hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk. Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shorten its walk or come back inside where it’s safe. 9. Never leave your dog in a parked car. Even in the shade, a car retains more heat than an open area. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car because of passersby or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. 10. Be aware of the weather. During the summer, carry a bottle of water on walks and watch for signs of dehydration. In the winter, protect your dog with doggie boots and gear made specifically for cold weather. 11. Dogs get bored just like humans. Provide mental challenges like a game of catch, an agility course, or a reward-oriented obedience game. 12. Project balanced energy. Dogs feed off your energy, so if you are frazzled, your dog will be too. Always remain calm and assertive!

A Member of the Family » The ultimate resource for integrating your canine companion into the life of your household.
Like human beings, dogs are eternally attracted to the concept of family. When they live in the wild, all canids naturally arrange themselves into family-based packs. Even if the dogs aren’t related to one another by blood, the bonds of living and surviving together turn them into a smoothly functioning unit. Within that unit, there forms a loyalty, a trust, and an understanding so deep, we as humans can only look on with awe. These are the qualities we dream of having in our own relationships with the families that we are born into and the families we create, but being “only human,” we often fall short. But when we bring dogs into our lives, we have access to their inborn integrity. By making dogs full-fledged members of our families, we have the ability to make those human families stronger.
When an owner calls me in to help a dog, what I am really there to do is to create an orderly, functioning pack out of what appears to the owner as chaos. That pack can be anything from a single woman and her one dog living in a small apartment; to a monastery filled with twenty candidates for the priesthood and their watchdog; to a college sorority house and their canine mascot; to a senior citizen’s home and the therapy dogs that regularly visit there. To me, a pack is a family; they are one and the same. And wherever you have a dog that needs a home, you have the potential for a fantastic pack.
But although we yearn to include dogs as members of our families, we often don’t work together as families to welcome them into our human world. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a whole family to create a smoothly running pack. My intent with this book is to invite myself into your family while you’re reading my book. I want to stand by your side and guide you and your family through every phase of your dog’s life, from the day you bring her home, to the day you say goodbye and celebrate her life and death. I hope this book will reach out to every member of your family – from youngest to oldest - and invite each of them to participate in way of connecting with dogs that creates balance for dogs and humans alike. This connection doesn’t really require money, and it doesn’t really require any great level of education or intelligence. What it does require is putting common sense and instinct first, and understanding that sometimes, what seems best for the human is not the best thing for the dog.
I believe a strong family is the foundation of all achievement. If we have a family behind us cheering us on – whether that means just one dog or one human; or ten people or fifty dogs – we have a springboard of support to go out and reach any dreams to which we dare to aspire. Since my own human family is such a big part of my own mission, I have enlisted their help in the writing of this book. My wife Ilusion speaks to women in Chapter 8, and my sons Calvin and Andre offer their advice to kids in Chapter 9. I also include the wisdom of the dogs that are always members of our family, especially Daddy, the oldest member of my pack, and Junior, the youngest. Ilusion, Calvin, Andre and I are always learning from the wisdom our dogs share with us. Dogs teach us to live in the now. They teach us that the trappings of our human existence don’t matter so much in the long run – as long as we celebrate the moment, and never forget to appreciate one another.
If we remember to fulfill their needs first, dogs can add so much to our human families. A dog will always have your back, no matter what. With a dog in your life, you will never feel alone. And if you do, just go to a shelter. There is always a dog there, waiting, just looking forward to becoming a member of a family.

Cesar's Way » The # 1 New York Times bestseller available in paperback.
After they had finished mourning the loss of their adored Marley, the Grogans realized like so many of us do that their house would not be a true home again without a dog in it. Nine months after Marley’s passing, Jenny went to a breeder and picked out an adorable, purebred Labrador who resembled their lost friend. Because Marley had been so high-energy and rambunctious, Jenny was attracted to the apparent calmness of this puppy, and brought her home — figuring that, after thirteen years of Marley, the odds were in favor of them getting a “perfect” dog this time. The family named her Gracie.
True to Jenny’s expectations, Gracie did grow up to be a much calmer and more sedate dog than Marley. Unlike her predecessor, shedidn’t devour furniture or clothes or injure herself trying to dig through walls to escape whenever there was thunder outside. Gracie didn’t have Marley’s fear of loud noises, his hyperactive energy, or his burning need to fling his entire body at every stranger who entered the house. Inside the house, Gracie was peaceful and obedient, although she sometimes acted a little aloof and chose to do her own thing, in stark contrast with Marley, who had always wanted to be right at the center of any family activity. But it was when she went outdoors that Gracie turned into a real problem for the Grogans.
John and Jenny own a sprawling two-acre property surrounded by hills, trees, streams, and lakes, squirrels, rabbits, and other wild animals — a peaceful, private oasis and perfect paradise for any dog. They installed an underground invisible fence to create boundaries for Gracie, and allowed her to roam freely on their land all day long. Like so many of my clients, they mistakenly assumed that she was getting plenty of exercise on her own without daily walks with the family. Once Gracie left the house, however, she transformed into a completely different dog. She would refuse to come in when called, and the only way Jenny could get her to go back in the house was to bribe her with slices of bologna. “It works great — until you run out of bologna,” Jenny told me wistfully. The other problem (which the Grogans thought was completely unrelated to Gracie’s lack of consistent obedience) was Gracie’s obsession with hunting. She would spend all day stalking and devouring any small animal or bird that passed through the yard. The family had several chickens that provided them with eggs and that roamed free around the property, helpfully eating bugs and other garden pests. Of course, the family became attached to the chickens and treated them as pets. Unfortunately, two of those pet chickens met their maker after Gracie trained her predator’s eyes on them. “She ate Liberace,” Jenny admitted with a grimace. “You look differently at your dog once she’s eaten another one of your pets.” The Grogans moved the invisible fence so that the chicken’s coop was about four feet away from the boundary that Gracie wouldn’t cross, but she still stalked them obsessively, and therefore they couldn’t be let out to roam anymore. And, of course, when she was deep into her predator mode, not even bologna could entice her to obey her owners.
To me, the problem was clear. The obedience issue and the hunting behavior were totally connected. The Grogans had purchased a 100 percent, purebred, top-of-the-line retriever, and when they brought Gracie home, they also brought home her genetic blueprint. Although Gracie was trusting, loyal, and friendly, the Grogans were not fulfilling her needs as what I call animal-dog first, with structured exercise and clear rules, boundaries, and limitations. Because of this, they were coming smack up against her breed, which took over as a way for her to drain all that excess energy and frustration. The more purebred the dog, the more intense are the needs of the breed in her. Gracie’s genetics — her breed — were making her into a single-minded, focused, and exceptional hunter — but not a very respectful pet.
