DR. IAIN STEWART
Dr. Iain Stewart, host of National Geographic Channel's Earth: The Biography, is a world-renowned earth scientist, professor, author and world traveler. For over 20 years and through more than 30 countries, his goal has been to study the effects of major geological events over the last 10,000 years.
Stewart is currently a professor of geology in the School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences at the University of Plymouth in the United Kingdom. From 2002 to 2004, while working on several television projects, he was an honorary research fellow at the Centre for Geosciences at Glasgow University. Until then, he had spent the majority of his career teaching geology and earth sciences at Brunel University in west London. In 1986, he received his undergraduate degree in geology and geography from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, U.K., and then moved to the University of Bristol to complete his doctoral research on the geology of earthquakes in Greece and Turkey.
Stewart's main research interests are in the broad areas of Earth hazards and natural disasters, with particular focus on studying ancient earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. The majority of his field research has been in the Mediterranean region, which led to his first BBC television series (2004), the award-winning "Journeys From the Centre of the Earth," a geological journey through the architecture, art, food, climate, dangers and culture of the Mediterranean world.
Born in East Kilbride, near Glasgow, in 1964, Stewart attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before being cast as a "Gorbals Diehard" in the children?s BBC series "Huntingtower." Various television acting gigs followed, before his thespian career ended at age 16, cut short by his excellent science exam scores!
