In 2003, Zoe McGarrys life changed forever after trying to help a man called Tony. Shed met him in Nigeria while visiting the country with her husband, and they soon all became close friends. Tony had family in London, and Zoe and her husband invited him to stay in their house. But he began hanging around with a strange crowd, and one day he just disappeared. A few months later, he called Zoe from Ecuador, begging her to help him renew his visa so he could return to his family in the UK. Eventually, Tony persuaded Zoe to visit him to help with his paperwork. But once there, Tony began acting strangely. The two visited a local market where Zoe bought souvenirs, and Tony gave her a bag so she could carry them home. After a few frustrating days of trying to help Tony, Zoe decided to return to London. She never made it. As she was boarding the flight home, police arrested her and discovered around 5 pounds of cocaine in the lining of the bag that Tony had given her. Despite protesting her innocence, Zoe was convicted of cocaine smuggling and sentenced to eight years. In December 2008, Zoes prison sentence was cut short and she was deported back home to Ireland.
